It depends on what you have come for. Kalpetta sits most central and gives the shortest drives to the widest spread of sights; Vythiri and Lakkidi are up in the misty high ground on the Thamarassery ghat side; Mananthavady in the north is the quietest of the four and the closest base for Tholpetty and Kuruva Island; Sulthan Bathery in the east puts you nearest Edakkal Caves and Muthanga. Our own Nilara Hills is in Mananthavady, so if your plan is weighted towards the southern waterfalls we will say so and suggest a different base.

Two nights covers the main sights without rushing between them. Three nights lets you add a trek or keep one day deliberately empty, which in Wayanad is usually the day people remember.

Wayanad has no railway station of its own, and drive times depend on which town in the district you are heading to, so treat these as ranges rather than fixed numbers. From Bangalore it is roughly 270 to 280 km and about six hours; from Kozhikode, 70 to 115 km and two and a half to three and a half hours depending on the ghat; Mysore is around 140 km and Kochi around 240 km. The nearest airports are Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kannur, with Kannur usually the shorter run if you are staying in Mananthavady.

June to August is peak monsoon. During heavy-rain alerts the district administration can suspend trekking and adventure tourism, so check before you travel. If your trip depends on a trek or an outdoor activity, either avoid the heavy-rain windows or come prepared for the plan to change; the stay itself is rarely the problem, the activities are.

October to February is the most reliable stretch: cool, clear and suited to sightseeing and trekking, which also makes it the busiest. March to May is warmer and noticeably quieter, and the monsoon months are the greenest but the least predictable for anything outdoors.

Edakkal Caves, Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar Dam and Soochipara Falls are the four most people come for, with Kuruva Island and Thirunelli worth the drive if you are staying in the north. Entry and trekking at several of these depend on forest department permissions and on the weather, so we confirm what is actually open for your dates rather than printing a list and leaving you to find out.
