Bangalore to Wayanad: Routes, Timing and the Night Ban

Horizon Finder India team · 2026-10-28

The drive from Bangalore to Wayanad is roughly 270 to 280 km and takes about six hours in normal conditions. The part most people find out too late is that the main road closes at night: traffic through Bandipur on NH 766 is banned from 9 P.M. to 6 A.M., and from 6 P.M. for two-wheelers.

If you leave Bangalore after lunch on a Friday expecting to check in by ten, that single fact is the one that will ruin the evening. Everything below is organised around it.

How long does the drive from Bangalore to Wayanad actually take?

About six hours for roughly 270 to 280 km, if you cross Bandipur inside the open window. Outside it, the honest answer is that there is no six-hour version: you are either waiting for 6 A.M. or taking a longer road.

Drive times vary by where in Wayanad you are headed, because Wayanad is a district rather than a town. Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady are separate towns with real driving time between them.

What is the Bandipur night traffic ban?

It is a closure of National Highway 766 through Bandipur between 9 P.M. and 6 A.M., imposed by Karnataka in 2009. The highway runs about 19.7 km through Bandipur National Park and the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, and that forest stretch is the one that shuts.

This is not a local rule that gets waved through. The Supreme Court upheld the ban in August 2019, allowing only eight buses to cross at night, four from each state, and suggesting Karnataka develop an alternative route.

Is the ban still in force?

Yes, as far as we can confirm. Karnataka's forest minister held a meeting on 23 March 2025 and decided to maintain the status quo, with no decision to lift it.

It is worth saying plainly that this is contested rather than settled. The same meeting decided to file a fresh counter-affidavit, a new application had been filed in the Supreme Court, and no ruling was reported when that article was last updated in April 2025. Check before you travel rather than trusting any article, including this one. We confirm it for guests ahead of their dates.

Which route should you take?

Take NH 766 through Gundlupet and Bandipur if you will clear the park before 9 P.M.; take the northern road through Hunsur, Gonikoppa, Kutta and Katikulam if you will not. The second is longer and is also restricted, adding 30 minutes to the journey, so it is a workaround rather than a clean escape.

One thing the table cannot show: the northern route comes into Wayanad through Mananthavady. If you are staying in the north of the district anyway, the detour is not much of a detour.

What happens if you reach the gate after 9 P.M.?

You wait until six, or you turn around and take the northern road. There is no ordinary third option for a private vehicle.

The eight permitted night buses are the exception, not a loophole you can join.

Can you get to Wayanad by bus or train?

By bus, yes, and the only buses that cross Bandipur at night are the eight the Supreme Court allowed, four from each state. By train, not directly: there is no railway station in Wayanad.

The nearest railhead is Kozhikode, and sources differ on the distance because they measure to different places. One gives Kozhikode to Wayanad as 70 km; another puts the station 110 km away and lists Kozhikode to Wayanad at 116 km and 3.5 hours. Both are right for what they measured.

What about flying?

The nearest airport is Kozhikode (Calicut). One source lists it at 81 km and another at 93 km, again depending on where in Wayanad they measure to.

Flying in removes the Bandipur problem entirely, which is worth weighing against the fare if you can only travel on a Friday evening.

When should you leave Bangalore?

Before 1 P.M. if you want to clear Bandipur comfortably and still check in at a civilised hour. A 6 A.M. departure gets most people into Wayanad by lunchtime with the afternoon intact.

The trap is the Friday-evening start after work. That is precisely the departure that meets a closed gate.

How do you reach Wayanad from Mysore, Kochi or Kozhikode?

From Mysore the road runs through Gundlupet and Bandipur, so the same 9 P.M. rule applies. Kochi and Kozhikode approach from the Kerala side and do not cross Bandipur at all, which makes them the reliable options for a late arrival.

Where should you stay when you get there?

Where you base yourself changes which route makes sense, so it is worth deciding before you book. If you are staying around Mananthavady in the north, the Hunsur, Kutta and Katikulam road is a natural approach, though it is also restricted; if you are heading for Sulthan Bathery or Kalpetta, NH 766 and its 9 P.M. deadline is the thing to plan around.
