Resort in Wayanad: Where to Stay, When to Go and What to See

If you are looking for a resort in Wayanad, decide where in the district to base yourself before you choose a property. Wayanad is a high plateau in the Western Ghats in Kerala, and a stay in Wayanad feels very different from one near Kalpetta or Lakkidi. This guide covers the best base for your trip, when to go, what to see, and how to book with us.
Horizon Finder India now takes Wayanad stay enquiries
We have launched our Wayanad stay and trip planning service. We manage and promote a small set of resorts, villas and cottages in Wayanad, and we plan each stay around your dates. With 10 years in hospitality and more than 10,000 happy guests, our team knows the district well. Send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp, and we reply with options and confirmed rates. We do not publish prices, because the rate depends on your dates, your stay and your group size.
Which part of Wayanad is best to stay in?
It depends on what you have come for. Kalpetta sits most central and gives the shortest drives to the widest spread of sights. Vythiri and Lakkidi are up in the misty high ground on the Thamarassery ghat side. Mananthavady in the north is the quietest of the four and the closest base for Tholpetty and Kuruva Island. Sulthan Bathery in the east puts you nearest Edakkal Caves and Muthanga. Our own Nilara Hills is in Mananthavady, so if your plan is weighted towards the southern waterfalls, we will say so and suggest a different base.
How many days is enough for Wayanad?
Two nights covers the main sights without rushing between them. Three nights lets you add a trek or keep one day deliberately empty, which in Wayanad is usually the day people remember. A two-day plan works well for a first visit, and a three-day plan suits families and anyone who wants time at the resort itself.
How long does it take to reach Wayanad?
Wayanad has no railway station of its own, and drive times depend on which town in the district you are heading to, so treat these as ranges rather than fixed numbers. From Bangalore it is roughly 270 to 280 km and about six hours. From Kozhikode it is 70 to 115 km, or two and a half to three and a half hours depending on the ghat. Mysore is around 140 km and Kochi around 240 km. The nearest airports are Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kannur, and Kannur is usually the shorter run if you are staying in Mananthavady.
What is the best time to visit Wayanad?
October to February is the most reliable stretch. It is cool and clear, and it suits sightseeing and trekking, which also makes it the busiest. March to May is warmer and noticeably quieter. The monsoon months, June to August, are the greenest but the least predictable for anything outdoors.
When should you not visit Wayanad?
June to August is peak monsoon. During heavy-rain alerts, the district administration can suspend trekking and adventure tourism, so check before you travel. If your trip depends on a trek or an outdoor activity, avoid the heavy-rain windows or be ready for the plan to change. The stay itself is rarely the problem. The activities are.
What is the weather like in Wayanad in June and July?
June and July are the wettest months. Expect rain for much of the day, misty hills and very green tea estates. The views are striking, but outdoor plans should have a backup, and a resort with a covered space to relax is a good choice for these months.
What are the top places to visit in Wayanad?
Edakkal Caves, Chembra Peak, Banasura Sagar Dam and Soochipara Falls are the four that most visitors come for. Kuruva Island and Thirunelli are worth the drive if you are staying in the north. The Wayanad wildlife sanctuary connects to Bandipur and Nagarhole across the border. Entry and trekking at several of these depend on forest department permissions and the weather, so we confirm what is open for your dates before you plan around it.
A two-day Wayanad itinerary
Use the first day for the central sights around Kalpetta, including Edakkal Caves, which needs a walk up the hill. Spend the second day on the reservoir and falls, such as Banasura Sagar Dam and Soochipara Falls, and leave time to rest at your resort in the afternoon. Check opening times and permissions for each place on the day you travel.
Are there private pool villas in Wayanad?
Yes. Croods is a private pool villa we manage, and we can confirm whether it is free for your dates and what the layout suits. It tends to work best for a single group rather than two families sharing.
Is Wayanad good for couples and honeymoons?
It suits couples well. The good stays are spread out rather than stacked along one strip, so privacy is easy to find. Tell us your dates and whether you want seclusion or easy access to the sights, and we will put two or three options in front of you rather than a long list. Our honeymoon and couple stays are planned around your dates.
